🌱 NYC Reacts To Roe V. Wade Overturned + School Funding Cuts Revisited

Good morning, New York City! Yesterday New Yorkers hit the street in protest after the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade. In the wake of the court's Thursday decision striking down New York's concealed carry law, state and city lawmakers are considering their legal options, and–on a lighter note–it's LGBTQ+ pride this Sunday.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

1. In an unprecedented decision the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe V. Wade on Friday, leaving it up to individual states to decide whether to legalize abortion. Thirteen states have immediate abortion bans in place – but not New York, where reproductive rights were codified into law in 2019. "There is nothing to call this Supreme Court opinion but an affront to basic human rights and one that aims to shackle women and others in reproductive bondage," said Mayor Eric Adams in a statement. 2. After the Supreme Court struck down New York State's restrictive handgun carry law on Thursday, city and state lawmakers are exploring options to designated sections of NYC – or quite possibly the whole five boroughs – as a gun-free "sensitive location." Governor Hochul plans to call the State Legislature into a special session in July. (The City)
3. City Council members rallied to increase Department of Education spending on Friday, just weeks after voting for a budget that would cut school funding by $215 million. The members say they were not aware that the cuts would lead to panic and lay-offs across the system. (Gothamist)
4. The plan to fund a major renovation of Penn Station has come under scrutiny, after the state refused to disclose financial details from its negotiations with a developer. Under the plan, the developer, Vornado, would seize multiple city blocks and construct ten commercial skyscrapers. (New York Post)
5. Fleishers Craft Butchery, an upscale butcher shop with locations on The Upper East Side and Park Slope, is closing down for good months after its business was hit with controversy when it removed Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ pride signs from its window. The removal last summer had caused workers to walk out on the job, many not to return. (New York City Patch)
