NEW YORK CITY — More coronavirus vaccine shots have gone into arms in New York City than the entire population of Los Angeles, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

De Blasio on Wednesday announced that the city surpassed 4 million vaccine doses distributed since the inoculation effort began.

The sheer number of shots going to New Yorkers not only dwarfs the population of the city's super-size West Coast counterpart — Los Angeles — but goes farther than many smaller states.

"We're going to going farther going forward," de Blasio said. "We'll start comparing to state populations since we've run out of other cities to."

A huge swath of New Yorkers are newly-eligible for the vaccine or will be soon.

People who are 30 and up on Tuesday could sign up for vaccine appointments and receive shots. And on April 6, all New Yorkers 16 and up can receive the vaccine.

De Blasio repeated that the vaccination pace is only constrained by supply — an issue throughout the effort, albeit one that is becoming less of a concern.

"We're hearing good things about the April supply levels, we're hearing that there could be really extraordinary supply in May," he said. "So that says to me going into May, going into June, it's going to be easier and easier for people to get a shot."

De Blasio said he believes vaccine supply will ultimately outpace demand sometime through the summer.
