NYC Subway Delays: Signal Problems, Stuck Trains Stall Commute

Service changes and delays disrupted several train lines Tuesday morning.

NEW YORK, NY — Several subway lines experienced modified service and delays during Tuesday morning's commute as the MTA worked to fix signal problems, switch problems and broken down trains.

The E and F lines experienced multiple delays and service changes starting around 6:30 a.m. due to signal problems at the Briarwood/Main Street stop in Queens, according to the MTA. Signal problems were also reported at the Jamaica-Van Wyck station on the E line.

Service was restored to the E and F lines around 7:30, according to the MTA, but ran with delays for most of the commute.

About an hour later, a train with "mechanical problems" threw the F line into disarray once more. Trains were running express on the F line from Parsons Boulevard to Kew Gardens from about 8:45 to 9 a.m.

The Q line also experienced long service delays Tuesday while the MTA worked to fix a switch at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. Trains on the line ran with delays from 5:50-7:30 a.m., the MTA said.

The A line was the third to experience major problems Tuesday. Commuters from the Rockaway were stuck as the MTA worked to fix both signal problems and a train with mechanical problems at the Broad Channel station. The problems — which also affected service on the Rockaway shuttle line — disrupted service from about 8-9:15 a.m., the MTA said.

The L train also experienced service shutdowns after a passenger was injured at the Sutter Avenue station. All trains stopped running at Broadway Junction while responders aided the passenger for about 10 minutes around 9 a.m., the MTA said.

The MTA also warned commuters Tuesday about snowy conditions at stations.

"It’s a snowy morning. As you prepare for your commute, please remember to walk carefully on sidewalks and platforms and when boarding/leaving subways and buses. Check for service status; let’s travel together safely," the transit agency said on social media.
