NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes For May 20-21

NEW YORK, NY —Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, May 19, through early Monday morning, May 22 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service."

Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as 16(!) train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, South Ferry-bound 1 trains run express from 72 St to Chambers St.

2 train:

• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, May 21, and from 11:45 p.m. Sunday, May 21 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound 2 trains run express from 72 St to Chambers St.
• From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 20 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, Wakefield-242 St bound 2 trains run local from Chambers St to 96 St.

3 train:

• At all times until Spring 2017, 3 trains skip Sutter Av-Rutland Rd and Junius St in both directions. Use free shuttle buses instead.
  • For Service to/from Sutter Av-Rutland Rd, free shuttle buses operate between the Sutter Av-Rutland Rd station and the Crown Hts-Utica Av station at all times.
  • For Service to/from Junius St, free shuttle buses operate between the Junius St station and the Rockaway Av station at all times.
• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 3 service operates to/from New Lots Av all weekend, replacing the 4 in Brooklyn.
• From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 20 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 148 St-bound 3 trains run local from Chambers St to 96 St.

4 train:

• At all times until Spring 2017, 4 trains skip Sutter Av-Rutland Rd and Junius St in both directions. Use free shuttle buses instead.
  • For Service to/from Sutter Av-Rutland Rd, free shuttle buses operate between the Sutter Av-Rutland Rd station and the Crown Hts-Utica Av station at all times.
  • For Service to/from Junius St, free shuttle buses operate between the Junius St station and the Rockaway Av station at all times.
• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, Woodlawn-bound 4 trains skip 138 St-Grand Concourse.
• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 4 trains are suspended in both directions between New Lots Av/Crown Hts-Utica Av and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. Take the 2/3/J/N/Q or R instead. For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the N/Q or R. For service to/from Wall St and Bowling Green, use the R (N overnight) at the nearby Rector St or Whitehall St stations. For service to/from Fulton St, use the 2/3 or J. For service between Borough Hall and Franklin Av, take the 2 or 3 instead. For service between Franklin Av and New Lots Av, take the 3 instead, running all weekend in Brooklyn.
• From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 20 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 4 service operates in two sections: Between Woodlawn and 125 St, and between 125 St and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.

5 train:

• From 11:30 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 5 trains are suspended. Take the 2/4 and/or free shuttle buses. Free shuttle buses operate between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St, making all 5 line station stops. For service between E 180 St and 149 St-Grand Concourse, take the 2. For service between 149 St-Grand Concourse and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, use the 4. For Fulton St, Wall St, and Bowling Green, use nearby R stations at Cortlandt St, Rector St, or Whitehall St. Transfer between 4 and R trains at 59 St or Canal St.

A train:

• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, A trains are rerouted via the F line in both directions between W 4 St-Wash Sq and Jay St-MetroTech.

C train:

• From 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, C trains are rerouted via the F line in both directions between W 4 St-Wash Sq and Jay St-MetroTech.

D train:

• From 11:30 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, D trains are suspended in both directions between 59 St-Columbus Circle and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. F/N/Q/R trains and free shuttle buses provide alternate service.
  • D service operates between Norwood-205 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle, and runs express via the A to/from Chambers St, the last stop.
  • N trains replace the D in Brooklyn between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.
  • Free shuttle buses run between W 4 St-Wash Sq and Grand St, stopping at B’way-Lafayette St.
  • For service to/from 7 Av, use the N/Q or R at nearby 57 St-7 Av. Or, use E via transfer at 42 St/Port Authority. For 47-50 Sts, 42 St-Bryant Pk, 34 St-Herald Sq, and B’way-Lafayette St, take the F instead via transfer at W 4 St-Wash Sq. For Grand St, take a shuttle bus at W 4 St-Wash Sq.
  • For service to Brooklyn, take the N Transfer via the passageway at Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority.

E train:

• From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 20 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, World Trade Center-bound E trains run express from Forest Hills-71 Av to Queens Plaza.

F train:

• From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 20 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, Manhattan-bound F trains run local from Jamaica-179 St to 21 St-Queensbridge.

G train:

• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, G trains are suspended in both directions between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Court Sq. Free shuttle buses make all stops between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Court Sq. Transfer between trains and buses at Bedford-Nostrand Avs.

J train:

• At all times until Summer 2017, Manhattan-bound J trains skip 121 St.
  • For service to this station, use the nearby 111 St station instead. Or, take the Manhattan-bound J to 111 St and transfer to a Jamaica Center-bound J.
  • For service from this station, use the nearby 111 St station instead. Or, take the Q56 bus and transfer to/from L service at nearby 111 St.
  • Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer bound J trains skip 121 St between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on weekdays. Take a Q56 bus or the Z train instead.
• From 3:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20 to 10:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21, J trains are suspended in both directions between Crescent St and Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer. Free shuttle buses and E trains provide alternate service via Jamaica-Van Wyck. Free shuttle buses operate between Broadway Junction and 121 St, and connect with the E at Jamaica-Van Wyck, where service to/from Sutphin Blvd and Jamaica Center is available. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck and/or Crescent St.
• From 5:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, Broad St-bound Manhattan-bound J trains skip Flushing Av, Lorimer St, and Hewes St.

L train:

• From 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Sunday, May 21, L trains run every 20 minutes.

M train:

• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, M service is suspended in both directions between Middle Village-Metropolitan Av and Myrtle Av. M service operates between Essex St and Myrtle Av, and is rerouted via the J to/from Broadway Junction. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service making all M line station stops between Middle Village-Metropolitan Av and Myrtle Av. Transfer between shuttle buses and J/M trains at Myrtle Av. For direct service to/from Manhattan, use the L via transfer at Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs.
• From 5:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, Manhattan-bound M trains skip Flushing Av, Lorimer St and Hewes St.

N train:

• At all times until Spring 2017, Astoria-Ditmars Blvd bound N trains skip 86 St, Avenue U, Kings Hwy, 20 Av, 18 Av, New Utrecht Av, and Fort Hamilton Pkwy. N trains will stop at Bay Pkwy and 8 Av.
  • To 86 St, Avenue U, and Kings Hwy, take the Astoria-bound N to Bay Pkwy and transfer to a Coney Island-bound N.
  • To 20 Av, 18 Av, New Utrecht Av, and Fort Hamilton Pkwy, take the Astoria-bound N to 8 Av and transfer to a Coney Island-bound N.
  • From these stations, take a Coney Island-bound N to Bay Pkwy or Stillwell Av and transfer to an Astoria-bound N.
  • For New Utrecht Av-62 St, take the D Transfer to an Astoria-bound N train at 36 St.
• AT all times until Fall 2017 N trains skip 53 St in both directions. Take the B37 or B63 to the nearby 45 St or 59 St stations for N/R service. N trains stop at 45 St during late night hours only (12:01 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. every day).
• From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, N trains are suspended in both directions between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza. Free shuttle buses provide alternate service. N trains run between Queensboro Plaza and Coney Island-Stillwell Av (trains are rerouted via the D in Brooklyn). Free shuttle buses make all N stops between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza. Transfer between free shuttle buses and N trains at Queensboro Plaza.
• From 11:30 p.m. Friday, May 19 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, N trains are rerouted via the D in both directions between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 36 St. Free shuttle buses and R trains provide alternate service. Free shuttle buses make all N line station stops between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 36 St. Transfer between shuttle buses and N trains at 36 St, 62 St-New Utrecht Av, or Stillwell Av. Transfer between R trains and shuttle buses at 36 St or 59 St. Transfer between N and R trains at 36 St.

R train:

• At all times until Fall 2017 R trains skip 53 St and Bay Ridge Av in both directions. Take the B9, B37 or B63 to nearby stations. N trains stop at 45 St during late night hours only (12:01 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. every day).
