NYPD Increases Security At NYC Synagogues After Michigan Attack

The department will deploy high-visibility patrols to Jewish religious and cultural institutions across the city.

NEW YORK CITY — The NYPD said they are increasing security at synagogues and other religious institutions in the city after a man with a rifle rammed his vehicle into a synagogue in Michigan on Thursday.

The suspect rammed his car into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, according to authorities.

Security opened fire at the suspect and car. No children or staff were injured in the attack, but one security officer was struck by the vehicle and was knocked unconscious.

The suspect was found dead inside his vehicle.

“The NYPD is tracking the situation in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and we are in touch with our law enforcement partners,” the department said in a social media post. “Out of an abundance of caution, and given the overall heightened threat environment, we’re continuing to deploy high‑visibility patrols to Jewish religious and cultural institutions in the city.”

Last week, the NYPD ramped up security at Jewish cultural sites following the escalating conflicts in Iran.

"The attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan is horrifying. My thoughts are with the congregation and all who are shaken by this act of antisemitic violence. I am continuing to closely monitor the situation," Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, the NYPD will continue to deploy high-visibility patrols to Jewish religious and cultural institutions across the five boroughs."
