Patch Weekend Movie Guide: 'Logan,' 'The Shack' and 'Before I Fall'
Hugh Jackman is Wolverine and Octavia Spencer is God. Find out which performance we're not going to miss, plus a Netflix pick for the kids.

Here's what you need to know about this weekend's new movies: "Logan," "The Shack," "Before I Fall" and more. Find out what to see and what to skip, plus check out the trailers.
Opening This Weekend
"Logan" — Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, directed by James Mangold
Hugh Jackman's final ride as the legendary X-Men hero Wolverine arrives on Friday. "Logan" takes place in an alternate future where Wolverine cares for a dementia-stricken Charles Xavier. Mutants are all but extinct, when a mysterious and dangerous young girl enters their life. The excellent Mangold directed "Logan" as a high-concept Western and likely has created an all-time classic superhero film.

See it. I'm expecting an emotionally thrilling Wolverine ending, massive box-office returns and to leave the theater satisfied.

"The Shack" — Sam Worthington, Octavia Spencer, Radha Mitchell, directed by Stuart Hazeldine
After a devastating tragedy involving his child, Mack (Worthington) falls apart at the seams and begins to question his beliefs. When he receives a mysterious letter that beckons him to a cabin (and crime site) to meet God (Spencer), he obliges. An overly sweet lesson in faith follows. "The Shack," which is based on a best-selling Christian novel, boasts Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer but ultimately appears to be a story we've seen many times, repackaged.
Skip it. When I anticipate an incoming dud I always hope I'm wrong, but faith-based adaptations are wild cards. "Shack" will prove polished but underwhelming.

Quick Cuts
"Before I Fall" (Wide Release) — Zoey Deutch, Liv Hewson, Jennifer Beals, directed by Ry Russo-Young
Skip it. A teenager finds herself repeating the same day over and over again, dramatically trapped in a tragic loop while trying to alter her fate. Sound familiar? It is, but without the humor. Repeat: Watch "Groundhog Day" instead. Watch "Groundhog Day" instead. Watch "Groundhog Day" instead.

"Table 19" (Limited Release) — Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson, directed by Jeffrey Blitz
Skip it. Anna Kendrick plays an excommunicated bridesmaid who decides to attend the wedding anyway and ends up with a band of misfits at the marooned "Table 19" for singles. The trailer shows a great cast wasted on not particularly original material.

Netflix Picks
"The Jungle Book" (2016)
On paper this sounded like a terrible idea — a live action remake of an adored children's classic — but the result is an absolutely charming and sharp retelling for adults and kids alike. The success of "Book" gives me great hope for director Favreau's upcoming, similar treatment of "The Lion King."
"The Impossible" (2012)
Based on a true story, "The Impossible" follows a family on vacation in Indonesia when the devastating, fateful 2004 tsunami hits. Alive but scattered far apart in the chaotic aftermath, the family members embark on individual odysseys to find each other. Naomi Watts was nominated for an Oscar for her affecting performance.
