NEW YORK CITY — Rainy, windy weather will arrive in New York City Tuesday, just in time to snarl holiday traffic and put a damper on any last-minute shopping for Thanksgiving dinner. Here is the latest timeline, and predictions from forecasters on how it will impact your travel.

A low pressure system will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and flooding to the NYC metro area beginning Tuesday, and through early Wednesday, per the National Weather Service. Anyone looking to get on the road or catch a flight may have delays to contend with, forecasters added — and as the storm is moving in from the Midwest, it could cause delays at other major airports that impact flights in New York.

Steady rain will develop Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday, with locally heavy downpours "causing nuisance flooding in some spots," per the National Weather Service. The storm is predicted to bring between 1 and 2 inches of rain to the area, with the most rainfall in parts of Long Island and northern New Jersey.

A coastal flood statement is in effect Wednesday morning for parts of Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens. Manhattan could see some flooding late Tuesday night, per the NWS.

Winds will also increase Tuesday evening, with gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour possible near the coast. This could cause downed trees and power lines, the NWS noted. Airline delays will also be possible during this time due to winds and poor visibility, added AccuWeather. Tuesday's high will remain in the mid-to-low 50s.

It appears that once this storm system moves through the area things should calm down by Wednesday afternoon, just in time for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and other festivities. Thanksgiving Day will be much calmer with sunny skies hitting a high near 53.

The weather for the Macy's parade will be a "solid 7 out of 10" with sunny to partly cloudy conditions, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said. "A pair of sunglasses may be needed depending on what side of the street you're on."
