Rally for Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kong at US & China Trade Forum
Supporters of Uyghurs, Tibetans & Hong Kongers rallied outside a trade conference of US & Chinese govt. officials & corporate leaders in NYC
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK -
On Dec. 10, protestors in Manhattan, New York City demanded human rights for Uyghur Muslims detained in internment camps in Xinjiang, China. They rallied in front of the Altman Building hosting China Conference: United States, a forum organized by the South China Morning Post publication. At the forum, government officials, corporate leaders and entrepreneurs from the United States and China discussed the future of U.S.-China relations. Protestors from the activism group, Uyghur Rally, demanded U.S. trade representatives put economic pressure on China to free Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. Demonstrators urged U.S. officials to leverage their economic influence to pressure the Chinese Communist Party to stop human rights violations against Uyghurs.
The protest occurred on the heels of the U.S. House of Representatives passing a bill demanding the U.S. government to more strongly respond to the issue of the approximately 1 million Uyghurs held in internment camps in China. There were also representatives of activism group Students for a Free Tibet. They joined Uyghur Rally to support the independence movements in Tibet and Hong Kong and campaign for human rights for Uyghurs in China.
