TD Five Boro Bike Tour Pedals Up An Extra Hour

The 40-plus mile tour May 1 will give cyclists an extra hour to ride car-free New York City streets.

NEW YORK CITY — The TD Five Boro Bike Tour's return this year is going an extra mile — time-wise, that is.

The May 1 event will run an extra hour to give cyclists more time to explore 40-plus miles of car-free New York City, organizers announced.

The additional hour is the Tour's first significant change in format in decades, organizers said.

“The extra hour is a game changer for the riders of the TD Five Boro Bike Tour,” said Ken Podziba, president and CEO of Bike New York, in a statement Monday. “The ability to spread out the start waves means less congestion, plus additional space to soak in the amazing views and enjoy a more leisurely, free-wheeling ride."

The 2022 Five Boro Bike Tour will bring the event back to full capacity — 32,000 riders — for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic struck, organizers said.

The pandemic's arrival began a rocky two years for the Tour. Beyond the capacity limit, last year's Tour was delayed because of bad weather from Hurricane Henri.

But this year is full steam ahead for the Tour, which has its registration open.

“DOT is thrilled that not only will the TD Five Boro Bike Tour be back at full capacity this year, but riders will also have an extra hour to enjoy riding on car-free roadways across all five boroughs,” said Ydandis Rodriguez, the city's department of transportation commissioner, said in a statement. “May will be Bike Month – and so I thank Bike New York for their work to have us kick it off right this year – as well as for their efforts year-round to promote bicycle ridership and safety amongst New Yorkers of all ages.”
