Walk-Up COVID Vaccinations Will Open To 75+ NYers At 22 Sites

NEW YORK CITY — New York City seniors soon will have more places to get a COVID-19 vaccine with less the wait.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday the city will expand a program that allows people 75 and up to walk-up to vaccination sites and get shots without appointments.

The city will offer these walk-up shots at 26 sites starting this week, city officials said.

"This is the group we need to reach the most," de Blasio said. "This is a tactic that we know is working."

The city-run pilot initiative began at Citi Field in Queens, Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn and Bathgate Contract Postal Station in the Bronx.

Those sites became the only places in the city where New Yorkers could officially walk up and get vaccine doses without an appointment. They aimed to get New Yorkers who are 75 and older vaccinated, but the sites also offered doses to eligible people who escorted the seniors into the locations.

The expanded sites will offer shots to eligible escorts as well, a mayor's office spokesperson confirmed.

De Blasio said the new sites will set aside doses and appointments for seniors, as well as conduct outreach in surrounding communities.

More than 4.6 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have went into arms in New York City so far, de Blasio said. That's more than the entire population of Kentucky, he said.
