5 Injured In Condo Fire Sunday In Valley Cottage

CLARKSTOWN, NY — An intense fire in the condominium complex off Mountainview Avenue Sunday afternoon injured five, one critically. Ten units were destroyed and 15 families were displaced.

It took about three hours to get the blaze under control. Helping the Central Nyack Fire Department were 10 departments from across Clarkstown and Rockland County and three ambulance corps, officials said.

The arson investigation unit also responded as well as the Clarkstown Fire Inspectors.

The critically injured resident was taken to Westchester Medical Center. Firefighters rescued one elderly woman who was treated and released.

One firefighter received a slight shock before the power was turned off. He was also treated and released.

Two of the displaced families were helped to find shelter by the Red Cross while 13 others found their own shelter, officials said.

Significant damage to the section on Sierra Vista Lane included not only the 10 destroyed units but also two that were significantly damaged and another three with mostly smoke and water damage.

With the buildings set off from the street, firefighters' trucks were almost a football field away from the blaze.
