ShareYourWish, a “social enterprise committed to supporting the needs of parents, children, those in need, and the world we share,” was inspired by the frustration Rebecca and Buck Schleifer felt with what they saw as the excessive, often frivolous, gift giving at their children’s birthday parties. They thought that their children already had more toys than they could ever need, and they started to become concerned that the real importance of the day – the celebration – was starting to get overshadowed by the material aspect. They were concerned about what lessons they were teaching their children.
By creating ShareYourWish, they say they created a “unique teaching opportunity about the virtues of generosity and selflessness” for children. By using the traditional gift exchange process and ShareYourWish, parents may register their child’s birthday on ShareYourWish.com, to direct gift givers to give their gifts on the site. A percentage of those gifts may be designated as a donation to charity, with the remaining amount is placed in a gift fund for the birthday child.
