Clarkstown South Class of 2010 Celebrates its Successes

Dressed in gold and brown gowns, Clarkstown South High School's Class of 2010 celebrated their accomplishments of four years in a memorable commencement ceremony held Thursday at the school's athletic field in West Nyack.

The graduation was chronicled by speeches made by graduating seniors and school staff, where Principal James Vitale's mention that "It's always sunny [at] South, but it's certainly wet today" denoted the short downpour accompanying the senior's procession onto the athletic field.

Thomas Mulholland, student government vice president, introduced the "Troubadours" who delivered the Star Spangled Banner, and summed up to the cheer of pleased parents, friends, and colleagues seated on the benches overlooking the field.

Mulholland was followed by senior Alexander Donnelly, 2010 class president, whose request that "I'd appreciate a round of applause after everything I say" was followed by a cheering crowd and a speech likening the graduating class to Pokémon characters who are all of unique character, personality, and that "no two are alike."

In closing, he extended his appreciation and gratitude to the mothers, fathers and staff supporting the graduating class over the course of their academic careers at Clarkstown South, where "every graduating senior has the potential for greatness."

Class salutatorian Justin Fletcher recalled his summer camp trek up Mount Washington and how he was disappointed to find a café, road and train tracks at its summit. His speech discussed how there are "two routes to the same destination," where taking the easy route will ultimately not inspire happiness. Rather, he advised the seniors, "when you have the choice between driving and hiking up the mountain, take the hike."

The final senior to speak before the presentation of diplomas was class valedictorian Justin Mathew. Mathew compared the senior class to frozen and boiling water in a manner similar to Mulholland's use of the Pokémon metaphor. "Versatility and possibility" are our strengths, and like water molecules, "don't be afraid to do something different" because "if you're flexible enough, life will never leave you bent out of shape."

As the seniors readied themselves to approach the podium and receive their High School diplomas, Principal Vitale closed the ceremony much as he began it, with a celebration of the development and accomplishment of the senior class. "If you do what's right and if you contribute to the community, you're going to be very successful." 

The diplomas were then presented and the seniors approached the stage apart and left together, the boys wearing brown and the girls wearing yellow. The clouds dissipated and the sun shown brightly as they smiled, screamed, and celebrated the accomplishments they had achieved at Clarkstown South.
