County Legislature OKs New RCC Budget, Tuition Hike

Students to pay $90 more a year.

Rockland Community College's new $64 million budget, along with a $90 per year tuition increase, was approved Tuesday night by the Rockland County Legislature in New City.

"We appreciate the legislative support very much," said RCC President Cliff Wood told the lawmakers.

Although Tuesday's full session of the Legislature included a public hearing on the RCC budget, no one from the public spoke out about RCC.

The budget is up about 3 percent from last year's $62 million budget. Students attending RCC next year will have to pay $90 more, or $45 per semester. Last year, RCC had a little less than 6,000 students enroll at the school, but Legislature Chairwoman Harriet D. Cornell, D-West Nyack, said the enrollment is expected to continue to grow.

Cornell also praised Wood and the college for keeping the tuition increase to $90 "in these times of economic woe."

The budget was unanimously adopted by the Legislature. The spending plan was already approved by the RCC Board of Trustees and has the backing of Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef.

The County Legislature must sign off on RCC's budget because about $16 million of that budget comes from the county government.
