Election 2017: Rockland Primaries Put Focus on Third Party Lines

Contested races for some parties in Clarkstown, Nyack, Orangetown and countywide races.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The primaries are Tuesday and several races in Rockland County are quite heated, among them several in communities covered by Patch. The usual primary rule — that only voters registered with a party can vote in that party's primary — has been waived by the Reform Party, which will let independent voters vote in its primaries.

Polls are open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wondering where yours is? Use the county Board of Election's Polling Place Look-up tool.

Keith J. Cornell and Alden H. Wolfe are running for Rockland County Surrogate Court Judge. They're vying in the Democratic and Working Families primaries, seeking to get those lines in the general election in November.

The Conservative primary for County Executive heated up when 500 new Conservative Party voters registered this summer. Thomas Sullivan is challenging incumbent Ed Day, who was endorsed by the county committee.

Day called for an investigation into the influx of Conservative voters. Sullivan rebuked him for challenging legal registrations.

Meanwhile, two other primaries for County Executive have but one person plus the opportunity for voters in those parties to write someone in: the Reform Party, which also has Ed Day on the ballot, and Working Families, which also has Maureen A. Porette on the ballot.

Clarkstown

Three people are seeking three third-party lines in the race for two seats on the Clarkstown Town Court. Aimee M. Pollak, Craig E. Johns and Scott B. Ugell are all seeking to get on the ballot on the Independence, Reform and Working Families parties.

There's a Republican primary for Clarkstown Town Council in Ward 3, as Donald Franchino and Adrienne Carey seek the line for the November election.

Nyack

Four people are seeking the two Democratic lines in the Village Trustee race: Anngela Vasser-Cooper, Elijah A. Reichlin-Melnick, Marie T. Lorenzini and Joe Carlin.

Orangetown

In Orangetown, voters registered as Green Party have an opportunity to write people in for the Town Council and Town Supervisor races.
