Hillcrest Man Accused In Monsey Synagogue Vandalism

The total damage was over $250, police said.

RAMAPO, NY — A 32-year-old Hillcrest resident faces charges in connection with anti-Semitic vandalism found at a Monsey synagogue June 17.

Rolando DeJesus Gomez-Velasquez was arrested and charged with two felonies: criminal mischief as a hate crime and first-degree aggravated harassment. He was released June 25 for a future court date.

Scrawlings were on walls in various parts of the building on Suzanne Drive and a couple of items were damaged, including a computer screen and clothing, Police Lt. Chris Franklin told Patch. Swastikas were found hidden in several locations, including under a counter and behind a coat rack.

News of the vandalism angered Rockland County Executive Ed Day, who issued a statement condemning it. "Any act of hate is an insult to our entire County and will not be tolerated," he said.
