Hit-and-Run, Baby In Car: 2 Overnight DWI Arrests

Ramapo police found one driver who had fled onto the Palisades Parkway and another with a baby in the car at 1:20 a.m.

HILLCREST, NY — Ramapo police officers made two separate arrests for drunken driving within three hours of each other overnight.

In the first incident, at 10:30 p.m., police received a report of a hit-and-run crash on East Eckerson Road in the Hillcrest area. The driver who left the scene was followed onto the Palisades Interstate Parkway, police said.

An officer located and stopped the car. The operator, a 62-year-old woman from Spring Valley, was placed under arrest and charged with DWI, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.

In the second incident, at 1:20 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle that had no front license plate. The officer concluded that the driver was showing signs of intoxication, and then located an open alcohol container. The 36-year-old West Haverstraw man also had a 10-month-old child in the car.

He failed Standardized Field Sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. He is charged with DWI (Common Law), DWI with a BAC greater than .08 percent, Aggravated DWI (Leandra's Law) for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a child less than 16 years old as an occupant, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Both parties were being held pending arraignment Wednesday morning.
