Legislators Recognize National Recovery Month
Legislature Joins Month-long National Observance

Rockland County Legislator Christopher Carey and Chairman Alden H. Wolfe joined to declare September 2014 National Recovery Month in Rockland County. The month-long national observance recognizes the social benefits of programs that provide prevention, treatment and recovery for persons with mental health and substance use disorders.
“Millions of Americans are affected with mental health disorders or substance addictions that have an immense impact on the economy, their families and society, in general,” said Legislator Carey. “Many have been successfully transformed through recovery programs. It is important to honor the accomplishments of the individuals, as well as the outreach to those who are still seeking treatment on the road to recovery.”
George Hoehmann is the CEO and Executive Director of the Rockland Independent Living Center, a New City-based consumer-directed, cross-disability advocacy and service organization that also works with persons in recovery. “I thank Legislator Carey and Chairman Wolfe for recognizing the importance of National Recovery Month and all that it represents to those seeking a better quality of life through recovery oriented services,” said Mr. Hoehmann. “The goal of National Recovery Month is to celebrate the continued success of those who have achieved long-term recovery and to recognize, encourage and support those who struggle to overcome mental health issues and addiction.” Mr. Hoehmann serves as a member of the national steering committee under the auspices of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that is tasked with the planning and commemoration of National Recovery Month activities conducted by SAMHSA and the White House Office of Drug Policy, he attended the kick off ceremony and luncheon earlier this month in Washington D.C.

“It is important that those affected are afforded the opportunity to receive treatment and work toward recovery,” said Chairman Wolfe. “We are fortunate that we have local organizations, like RILC, that are dedicated to the rehabilitation of people burdened by mental illness or addiction. We are pleased to recognize this important designation.”
