New Square Firebomber Given Youthful Offender Status, Can Be Released

Sharul Spitzer was convicted in April 2012.

A judge has granted a New Square man involved in a firebombing youthful offender status Tuesday and can be released from jail.

Lohud.com reported Shaul Spitzer was convicted of assault while trying to burn down the house of Aron Rottenberg in May 2011.

Rottenberg was burned over more than 50 percent of his body.

State Supreme Court Justice William Kelly said he was leaning against granting youthful offender status when the day began but was swayed by Spitzer’s comments to the court.

Spitzer had been sentenced to a seven-year prison sentence in April 2012. He has been held at the Eastern Correctional Facility.
