No Jail Time For Building Inspector Guilty Of Corruption

The judge complimented the defendant on his legal team, according to news reports.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — Uncovering political corruption in Ramapo doesn't necessarily mean sending officials to jail. Former Building Inspector Anthony Mallia, who faced almost 2oo criminal counts, won't even have to pay restitution for the $150,000 he cost Ramapo taxpayers. Mallia pleaded guilty to one felony charge. The judge complimented him on his legal team, TJN reported.

According to the criminal complaint, Mallia was grossly undercharging contractors for building permit applications for new residential construction projects. (SIGN UP: get Patch’s daily newsletter, news alerts and updates, or download the Patch App.)

At the time Mallia was charged, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said, “This case goes to the very heart of corruption. According to the charges, the defendant developed an elaborate scheme to steal taxpayer money rather than to ensure public safety and compliance. His breach of the people's trust comes at a time when the residents of Ramapo are demanding honesty from their leaders. Such self-serving criminal behavior severely undermines public confidence in government and will not be tolerated.”
