Owners, Campers Have a Sense of Play at Champion

Business: Champion Day Camp
Owners: Sasha and Judy Bunchuk
Websitewww.championdaycamp.com
Address: New City- 175 W. Clarkstown Rd.

How did you come up with the name?
Every child loves to be called a Champion!
We teach children that whether it be sports, the arts, mountaineering, swimming or any  of the  many other  activities they will be Champions.

Why choose that location? Why start a business in this town?
We opened 37 years ago. The need for a summer day camp that offers all kinds of activities including arts and crafts, mountaineering,  sports, swimming and a myriad of  other fun things still exists
today. Kids never forget their days at camp and parents know it.

Briefly, what business are you in?
Children's Day Camp for ages 3-15.

What's the most difficult moment or challenge you've faced as a business owner?
Each summer presents its own challenges. With a great staff, loving counselors and rigorous standards any difficult moment becomes a memory.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?
No.

What's been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?
Seeing the children of previous campers coming to camp. Very soon their grandchildren will be the new Champions.
My 2 grandkids are already "oldtimers."

What's the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?
Each year we add a special event. What makes camp special is that we are more than DisneyWorld. We added pickleball 25 years ago and now its the rage. Our 52 ft, Humongous Climbing Tower is the only one of its kind. New water slide activities, go carts, a genuine Tipi, wild and crazy Special Events every week make Champion Day Camp a constant work in progress.

How do you deal with difficult customers?
The only difficult customers we have ever had are the ones who don't send theior children to camp. They don't know what they are missing.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
We donate our facility to local community groups. We participate with Alex's Lemonade Stand- a cancer research group.
