Paul Organizes Rockland Celebration of Indian-American Heritage Month

A kickoff event is set for 6:30PM Aug. 2 in New City.

NEW CITY, NY – August is Indian-American Heritage Month in Rockland and New York state and to celebrate, County Legislator Aney Paul has invited a group of dancers to perform prior to the start of the board’s Aug. 2 meeting.

“Like our invited guests, I am so proud to share part of my heritage with the larger community,” Paul said. “The performers will offer a glimpse of some of the dances that are part of India’s rich cultural fabric and by doing so, allow others to share in a valuable cultural experience.”

Bindya Prasad, a dance teacher and the principal of the Mayura School of Arts, will join with four of her students, ages 16-30, in presenting the dances. Prasad has been recognized for her dancing abilities in India and expanded her school to eight locations in the Tristate area, including offering classes at the Clarkstown Reformed Church in West Nyack.

The measure was sponsored by Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski and Senator David Carlucci. On behalf of the Indian community, Legislator Paul thanks them for sponsoring the resolution.

“We have a very robust and engaged Indian American Community here in Rockland, and throughout the entire State of New York,” Zebrowski said. “I am proud to have sponsored a resolution declaring August 2016 Indian-American Heritage Month in New York State. Together with Rockland County’s resolution we will be able to celebrate the diversity and wonderful Indian culture throughout the month of August.”

Paul said she plans to deliver a Proclamation noting Indian-American Heritage Month when the Rockland County India Day parade takes place on Aug. 20.
