Rams Face Tough Competition at Pearl River
Clarkstown North's track & field team placed second for boys and third for girls against Tappan Zee and Pearl River.
The cold and windy conditions at Tuesday's track & field meet did not lessen the intense level of competition that evening. Clarkstown North and Tappan Zee competed hard against each other and host team Pearl River.
The Rams entered the meet with a 4-4 record for the guys and a 2-6 record for the girls. Coming into the meet, the team knew they had their work cut out for them to win against Pearl River, which has an excellent track & field program with a long and consistent history of success.
The boys beat Tappan Zee but lost to Pearl River. While the boys would have liked to challenge Pearl River more, they faced difficulties coming into the meet. They were missing a number of players, including their best sprinter, Tarik Turner. Tarik, the number one 200 meter runner in the county, is expected to return next week in a limited roll for the league championships. The girls, who were missing team members as well, unfortunately lost to both teams. While they did come out and work hard, they are a young team competing in an especially competitive league with many excellent programs and highly skilled athletes.

While the Rams couldn't come home with a team win, they did have outstanding performances in some of the events. Russ Vignali had a great night in winning the 1600 meter race and anchoring the 4x800 meter relay, which Clarkstown won as well. On the girls side, Uche Emili lived up to expectations when she won the shot put after she put it over 35'. As only a sophomore, Uche holds the title of number one shot putter in the county. She also set the new school record for Clarkstown North last week in the same event. Other athletes to watch out for this season are senior captain Jamie Etkind on the girls side and Tarik Turner on the boys side.
Only the top three competitors in each event at Tuesday's meet were awarded any points. Clarkstown's performance was hurt by the absence of many of their athletes, who score a lot of those second and third place points. However, the lack of a win was not too disheartening for the team, as they came out and played hard. According to Coach Pete Rodrigues, "Everyone stepped up, worked hard, and competed. There were some really great performances at the meet."

These league meets, though important, are not the major focus of the program. The Rams are focused ahead and gearing up for the championship meets at the end of May. These promise to be exciting and intensely competitive, as does their next big meet at Clarkstown South this coming Tuesday.
