The goal of the program is to help people with addiction stay out of the criminal justice system.

NEW CITY, NY — Rockland County and the town of Clarkstown announced a new program that would help people stay out of the criminal justice system who are charged with low-level misdemeanors and are addicted to substances.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II during a news conference Friday said his office was awarded a federal grant from the Department of Justice in the amount of $899,964 for the three-year Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program.

The program will begin in the town of Clarkstown early next year, Walsh said.
