Rockland County Recognizes National Police Week

This year tributes were posted on social media to those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

NEW CITY, NY — Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Sheriff Louis Falco III want residents to know that May 10 through May 16 is National Police Week. A memorial service is usually held each year outside the Rockland County Courthouse but it was unable to be held this year due to the new coronavirus.

This year, in honor of the county's fallen heroes, the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office posted tributes on social media to those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and whose names are inscribed on the Rockland County Law Enforcement Memorial which is located in front of the Rockland County Courthouse in New City.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Flags outside county-owned buildings in New City and Pomona and in Rockland County Parks will fly at half-staff throughout the weekend to honor those who lost their lives.

“As a former member of our law enforcement community, I urge our residents to honor those who protect and serve us every day,” Day said. “Additionally, we must never forget those courageous officers who paid with their lives so that others might live in safe and secure communities. I ask that all of us, as neighbors, show their support to the families of our local warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of this community. I know that we as a community will always stand together against the criminal forces of evil.”

“Each year we come together at this time to remember our fallen heroes and their families. We cannot thank them enough for their sacrifice," Falco said. "We must never forget what they have done for us, but always cherish and honor their memory. For as long as we remember, a part of those lost will always remain".
