Rockland to Honor Local Employers at National Disability Employment Awareness Month Ceremony

Congers-based ARC of Rockland nominated 2 local companies for awards.

Two companies nominated by ARC of Rockland will receive awards at the annual Employment Awareness Month Ceremony Oct. 24 at The Chalet @Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern.

The event is sponsored by The Rockland Employment Network and The County of Rockland.

Ed Burke, General Manager of Fairway Market in Nanuet will receive a Regional Award at the event.

Nominated by ARC of Rockland, Fairway Market was noted for its practice of community involvement including the hiring and support of people with disabilities.

“Fairway Market exemplifies the 2014 National Disability Employment Awareness Month theme: Expect, Employ, Empower,” said Kathy Canter, ARC Director of Job Placement Services.

Robert Woodill, General Manager of the HMS Host Corporation at the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza in Sloatsburg, NY will accept the statewide award for that company’s long time commitment to hiring people with disabilities. The Sloatsburg Travel Plaza operates several restaurants, two of which, Burger King and Sbarros, have employed workers through ARCs Career Services Division for more than 20 years. Five additional people have been hired through ARC of Rockland to work in various Travel Plaza positions.

“HMS Host is committed to providing a diverse workforce and therefore bettering the lives of all employees,” Canter said.
