Should Your Kid Get a "Kid" Drum Set?

In my opinion, not really, only if you don't have the extra $'s to spend on a better quality, smaller regular kit.  In the end, any kit is better than no kit, but most of the lower-end Jr./Kid kits come from manufacturers that aren't leaders in the drum field.  Those that are leaders, put out better quality drums, even if their smaller sets are more expensive - but often not by that much, especially if used.

Why invest in a better kit for my 3,4,5,6 year old?
It's easy to say, "he or she is so young, we just want to test interest, not invest so much now".  I get that.  But what if I gave you a bad paintbrush, bad paints and a bad medium to paint on, and asked to see if you liked painting. You wouldn't expect a masterpiece, but you might feel the results weren't good enough given he effort you put in - and be artificially discouraged.  You might not realize that even just a good brush, paints and medium can more easily create a better result, even as a beginner.  That early success make you want to play more.

Drums are no different.  Each piece acts as it's own medium.  A better set sounds and reacts better, at any level of playing - creating notes not noise, fostering interest and accomplishment. A "kid" set is often seen as a toy to the child because it sounds like a toy, as something to bang, and is ultimately something that can break more easily.

But my kid can't even reach the pedal of a real drum kit.
That may be true.  But an adjusted seat and some creativity can usually solve this problem.  Kids will eventual grow into it, and reaching the pedal isn't the most important thing.  Hitting the snare, toms and cymbal(s) comfortably is what you want when when little hands grab the sticks.

In all my readings of the drumming greats, and of how so many started early, 4,5,6,7,etc., they all started on kits that must have been adjusted, smaller versions of adult kits...because way back, manufacturers didn't make, or even conceive of the modern day "kid" drum set.

If you are local, and interested in supporting local business, I can unabashedly recommend reading my article:
