Rockland 5K Run/Walk Focuses on Breaking the Stigma of Mental Illness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and a 5K Run/Walk set for Saturday, May 19, will help support Rockland County residents and their families who are impacted by mental illness. The event will take place at Rockland Lake State Park. It is co-sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Rockland (MHA of Rockland) and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Rockland).

Regardless of ethnicity, age, religion or economic status, mental illness impacts the lives of at least one in six U.S. adults (44.7 million in 2016) and about 49.5% of adolescents. Estimates suggest that only half of people with mental illnesses receive treatment that can help them lead more fulfilling lives.

“It’s time to break the stigma of mental illness which prevents people from getting the help they deserve,” said Sandra Wolf, President of NAMI Rockland. “Mental Health Month gives all of us a valuable opportunity to celebrate the tremendous strides this nation has made in promoting mental health. It also helps increase the public's knowledge that effective services and support are available.”

“The race will enable us to share positive ways and personal stories to increase wellness,” said Stephanie Madison, President & CEO. “As we run/walk together we can raise awareness about mental health, celebrate recovery from mental illness and break the stigma. Our goal is to show there is help and hope for people living with mental illness.”

Proceeds will fund programs, provide education, create advocacy and support services for Rockland County residents. In addition to the run/walk,there will be events for children, food, raffles, music, giveaways and a wellness area that can be enjoyed by all!
