Spring Valley Mayor, County Fighting Over $125,000 Aide
At the center of the controversy are two men removed from previous offices for professional misconduct.

SPRING VALLEY, NY — The Spring Valley mayor has been told that a confidential aide he hired who had been removed from a previous job for government corruption cannot have a civil service job, The Journal News reported. So he's planning to bring him back on as a contractor.
The mayor is Alan Simon, who once ran Ramapo's building and zoning department and then was elected a judge in Spring Valley and Ramapo. He was removed from the judgeships for professional misconduct. The confidential aide is Anthony Mallia, who worked for Simon in Ramapo and was Ramapo's building inspector until he was removed for professional misconduct.
Mallia worked for Simon in Spring Valley through 2018 at an annual salary of $125,000 over the objections of the county Probation Department and the District Attorney, TJN reported. Then the county Personnel Department found out he and the mayor had bypassed the civil service process. It took a year because the village didn't submit proper payroll records until December, said reporter Steve Lieberman.
