The Tappan-Zee High School Fencing Team Earns 3 Top Medals

The TZ HS Fencing team had their best year to date with a Gold in Mens Epee, Silver in Mens Foil, and Bronze in Womens Foil.

The Tappan-Zee Fencing team finished the 2017-2018 season with three top placements. The Rockland - Westchester fencing league includes Ardsley, Arlington, Clarkstown, Irvington, Lourdes, Mamaroneck, Woodlands, Tappan-Zee and Nyack high schools. The men's epee team were the defending sectional champions and posted an undefeated season winning the league. Senior Matt Chun and Sophomore Peter Shine lead the way in Mens epee and finished the season with only 4 losses between them. They fenced a strong Mamaroneck team in the Sectional championship and fell just a few touches short of the gold.

The men's foil team finished 2nd in the league with only one loss from Ardsley's championship team. Laurence Choi posted a 12-2 season and Ray Constancio finished with a 15-8 record. Women's foil finished 4th in the league but upped their record in the sectional championship with a 3rd place finish. Susannah Kleiner contributed to the strong finish with a 16-3 record followed by Senior Anna Acosta & Freshman Jalena Mendez. The results from this year showed a huge overall improvement by both the Mens & Womens teams. Most of the success is credited to the fencers who trained all year at the Rockland Fencers Club (RFC) preparing for the high school season. The RFC is a top of the line fencing club with nationally ranked fencers located in downtown Nyack. The TZ fencing team trains at the 6,000 square foot RFC facility 3 times a week during the season.

Come out and cheer on the TZ Fencing team at the individual championships held at the Rockland Fencers Club (40 Lydecker St, Nyack, NY 10960) at 1:30pm on February 24th! This is the final tournament of the season.
