Tigers to Eagles

Troop 97 Congratulates John McGinn and Christian Pearson

John McGinn and Christian Pearson enjoyed their time together all the way back in Cub Scouts as young boys in Pack 46. They have remained friends over these many years and chose to share their Eagle Court of Honor in January, a culmination of their many years of service to our community and scouting. In a time where only about 6 Percent of all scouts rise to the rank of Eagle, to have two lifelong friends achieve it is truly amazing.

John McGinn’s project was overseeing the construction of a series of wheelchair accessible raised garden beds and installation of a wheelchair accessible greenhouse at Jawonio, a nonprofit organization that provides lifespan services to people with disabilities in the Hudson Valley.

John selected the project because he wanted to provide the children who attend Jawonio an educational and, more importantly, fun activity that was not offered to them before.

When completed, the Eagle board was impressed with his knowledge and experience. John's own words said it best, "scouting showed me what I can do and what I am capable of. It gave me the confidence to do things I never thought I could and succeed at them."

Christian Pearson's project, benefited the Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack. The project involved designing and constructing a series of storage cabinets and a fold down work station for the theatre's electrical and sound departments, new cabinetry for the costume shop and movable wig storage units for the hair and makeup department.

Christian's project tied in directly with his career aspirations in theatre design. This powerful connection was not lost on the members of the board. Christian is currently studying at SUNY Fredonia.

Christian's project truly reflects the teachings of Troop 97's Trail to Eagle program. That is to first recognize a need, think outside the box for a solution then create a project you are passionate about for a beneficiary that you have a strong connection to.

Both John and Christian have been exceptional mentors to younger scouts, and have gained the respect and admiration of the scouts and leaders alike. We are grateful that they have influenced our troop, and proud to have been a part of it.

Congratulations.
