Turmeric, The super food!

Turmeric, an orange-colored spice imported from India, is part the ginger family and has been a staple in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cooking for thousands of years. Its also used for medicinal purposes due to its amazing health benefits

Turmeric is a root plant from the ginger family. It is native to South East Asia and thrives in tropical weather. and also need a good amount of rainfall for this Rhizomes to thrive. It is mostly grown in parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Turmeric can only be grown indoors in the any indoors in ideal temperature of 20C but and is a little tricky to start with, but once the dormancy of the rhizome has been broken it is easy to grow as a houseplant. Excellent DIY project!

If these Rhizome roots are not used fresh they are boiled for about 30-45 minutes and then dried in hot ovens, after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly known as Turmeric powder.

The powder is commonly used as a spice in Curries and other Indian, Thai and Middle Eastern cultures. It gives the curries a district color. Its active ingredient is Curcumin and it has a very distinct earthy, slightly bitter, slightly hot flavor and a mustardy smell. Turmeric is also used for Dyeing and to impart color.

Turmeric has a very high anti oxident content which boots the immune system. Due to its powerful anti inflammatory value, its vital in use for Arthritis and other joint pains. It is also used as an antiseptic and as medicine for treatment of an array of diseases, including Alzheimers, Diabetes Allergy and other chronic illnesses. Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurvedic medicine.


Common household uses of Turmeric:

Most common uses are used for face mask- add turmeric to milk cream and honey make a mask, apply daily....removes hair, astringent, cools sun burn, clears complexion.

Turmeric can cause hair to become less thick so it is often used my Indian women on unwanted facial hair. Make a paste of heavy cream, egg white turmeric powder. Use as face mask.

Cough medicine- Put some turmeric to warm milk and drink. Soothes the throat and lungs.
