Two Rockland County Schools Prepare to Defend State Fencing Titles

As the leaves change and cold weather starts to sweep in it signals a 30 day countdown to Fencing Season! By mid November fencing practice will start up for both the Tappan Zee and Nyack High school teams and they have major fencing titles to defend.

The Rockland County schools belong to a very competitive Westchester-Rockland fencing league with Ardsley, Arlington, Clarkstown, Irvinton, Lourdes, Mamaroneck, Nyack, Woodlands, Tappan-Zee and a few other High Schools. Both schools have big shoes to fill after last years senior fencers graduated but it seems like Nyack HS has the biggest. Malcolm Jackson (overall Nyack Team captain) and Richie Muratore (Foil Captain) graduated last year and they finished their HS career with a combined record of 160 wins & 6 losses! TZ HS lost a strong female foil fencer in Grace Duffy but have some potential freshman to fill in.

Last year the Nyack Fencing team won multiple sectional & league titles:

• Mens Foil - NY State League Champions
• Womens Foil - NY State League Champions & Sectional Champions
• Womens Epee - NY State League Bronze Medalist
• 6 Fencers were Individual NY State All Section winners

Tappan Zee HS Fencing Team:

• Mens Epee - NY State Sectional Champions & League Bronze Medalist
• Mens Foil - NY State Sectional Bronze Medalist
• 2 Fencers were Individual NY State All Section winners

If you are serious about joining a team and want to make the Varsity squad you can start by taking fencing lessons at a local fencing academy like the Rockland Fencers Club (RFC) located in Nyack, NY. The RFC trains students from both the Nyack HS and Tappan Zee Fencing teams at their 6,000 sq foot state of the art fencing academy.
