Thomas McGinn Becomes New Chair of Medicine at North Shore LIJ

The has appointed Thomas McGinn as chair of medicine at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center as well as professor of medicine and chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.   

Dr. McGinn comes to North Shore-LIJ from the Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was chief of general internal medicine.  In that position, he ran Mount Sinai’s adult inpatient and outpatient care of general medicine patients while building an innovative, dynamic research program from the ground up. In his seven years as chief, he developed a research and fellowship program, mentored and promoted clinician-educators, created an academic hospitalist program, expanded primary care services, and attracted and retained talented faculty. Dr. McGinn transformed the division into a national model widely recognized as a source of leadership and innovation, earning awards from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and National Institutes of Health.   

While at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. McGinn served in various leadership roles, including vice president of alliance development. In that position, he worked closely with the medical center’s CEO, dean and president to develop relationships and partnerships with other institutions and large medical practices throughout the metropolitan area. He also provided extensive input, guidance and advice to the medical center’s ongoing efforts to develop, implement and evaluate a system-wide electronic medical record.          

In his new role, Dr. McGinn will oversee all medicine programs at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center, including 145 full-time faculty physicians and more than 1,500 voluntary physicians, as well as approximately 140 medical residents of the Department of Medical Graduate Education.  “Dr. McGinn is a highly experienced clinical leader, educator and researcher with a proven track record in developing academic programs, managing large scale medical practices, directing quality care initiatives and he is widely recognized for his expertise in evidence-based medicine,” said Lawrence Smith, MD, executive vice president and physician-in-chief of the North Shore-LIJ Health System and dean of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.  “As a top educator in his field, Dr. McGinn will also play a key role in developing and teaching programs at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine as well as enhancing the academic and clinical medicine programs at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center.”   

Dr. McGinn is an authority in evidence-based medicine (EBM), comparative effectiveness and medical education, and has established his own core research programs. He has received state, federal and foundation funding to support his research and training in those areas, as well as support for a unique program in hepatitis C. He has also published extensively in the areas of EBM, medical education and clinical research.          

Dr. McGinn held the endowed Dr. Clifford L. Spingarn Professorship of Medicine and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, has published extensively, and is a reviewer and member of the editorial board of several leading medical journals.  He currently serves as president of the national Association of Chiefs of General Internal Medicine.  

Dr. McGinn earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn and completed his internal medicine residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Bronx Municipal Hospital Center.  He also earned a Master of Public Health degree at Columbia University.
