And Now Irene!
Hurricane Irene has left many of my neighbors in the dark. This comes after much damage from the previous hail storm.
I was one of the lucky ones during this hurricane who did not lose their lights. My mom, who is in her nineties, lost hers for about 20 hours and had to throw out food from her freezer. The next block up from me has no lights since Sunday's storm. As a matter of fact the entire section behind my house remains in the dark. I lost my three Optimum services: phone, television, and internet. They came back on this morning after being out for three days. But this was a mere inconvenience next to what my fellow neighbors are going through without their electricity.
It is true that we take things for granted until we have to do without them. Without electricity, you can't take a hot shower. Food storage becomes quite difficult even if you have a large cooler. Stumbling around in the dark night after night takes its toll on your nerves. I received a recorded message from LIPA that they are doing all that they can to restore power but I wondered how those without power received that message. This was the same for me when I finally was able to get back on the internet. I saw several messages from Cablevision about how they were working around the clock to restore service but I had no service to read these messages. Perhaps these companies hope that those of us who had the service would spread the word to our neighbors that lacked the service in the first place.
When the hurricane hit, I was still dealing with the damages caused by the hail storm. I have one car that remains at the collision place. It has been there for about three weeks, waiting for final approval from the insurance company for additional work that was needed more than originally planned. I had my roof checked out and was told that I need a new house roof as well as a garage roof. I have no leaks as of now but the insurance representative told me that there is significant damage. Most of my neighbors have been told the same thing.

August has been quite a month. We had a hail storm, an earthquake and now a hurricane. Can locusts be far behind?
