Classic Board Games Inspire NHP Art Class Creations

Board games like Sorry! and Mouse Trap served as muses for the Drawing and Painting class.

Classic children’s board games were used as the subject for an upcoming acrylic painting assignment in Danielle Livoti’s Drawing and Painting classes at New Hyde Park Memorial High School.

The students recently worked together to set the stage for their projects, using colorful game pieces from board games, such as Sorry! and Mouse Trap. After students arranged the game pieces, they held a light source and camera at different angles to create their ideal perspective of the composition. Once the students decided on the artistic vision they sought, a classmate photographed their concept for Livoti’s approval. Upon approval, students began sketching their concept on paper, which will ultimately will serve as inspiration for their acrylic painting.

According to Livoti, the use of board games represents a sense of play and nostalgia for students, who will also delve into symbolism as they contemplate the meaning of game pieces that have fallen over. As part of the project, students will use a variety of the painting techniques, including underpainting.
