Concern Over Integrity of Bryant Avenue Intersection

Cause of collapse of New Hyde Park intersection still under investigation.

The intersection of Bryant Avenue and North First Street continues to be a structural headache for the Village of New Hyde Park.

Ed Waldron, who lives on the North Hempstead side of the intersection, noted that he observes vehicles traveling on wrong side of the road to avoid the hazardous section in which the village side of the street had collapsed.

“Over 10 months ago I made the complaint and nothing’s being done,” said Waldron, who is also a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department. “There’s got to be something really wrong down there.”

“It’s not a new problem,” New Hyde Park Mayor Robert Lofaro said during a meeting of the village board on April 16 at the village hall.

Lofaro noted that a notice of defect has been done by e-mail between himself and village superintendent of public works Tom Gannon.

Gannon, who said that the village had previously filled the area with 6-10 yards of sand, reported that Nassau County inspected the area said that they have no leaks in their lines. He also reported that village engineers were brought in to check for leaks and drainage and had no way to tell unless they opened the street.

“We were even discussing the possibility of possibly a natural spring flowing,” Gannon said.

Cameras were also run through the pipes indicating no leaks.

The intersection is “completely compromised,” Lofaro said, noting the cement gutter along the curbing on the southeast corner needs to be replaced, top layer asphalt is peeling off.

“It’s not going to be where we just do a saw cut and throw some... it’s got to be in a sense, the whole intersection reconstructed,” Lofaro said.
