From Syntax: The H. Frank Carey High School Video Club was declared the winner of Assemblyman Ed Ra’s Antibullying Video Challenge. The students who produced the video are Gabriella Cavaleri, Christopher Dizon, Nicholas Hernandez, Dexter Hunt, Morgan Grant Hunt, Wassam Jawad, Isabella Mutt, Alison Silverman and Marco Sperrazza.

The contest provided an opportunity to address the physical, emotional, social and cyber bullying that is plaguing schools and adversely affecting students on all levels. According to statistics from the federal government, between one in three U.S. students say they have been bullied at school. The project allowed older students to serve as mentors to younger students, which can be a highly effective method for communicating a strong message while reinforcing concepts that the high school students are familiar with.

The video competition challenged students to think outside the box and work cooperatively and allowed them to have a hands-on creative experience with video production technology. They also learned how to combat bullying while promoting a community of acceptance and respect.
