Herricks Parents Concerned Over Potential Gemini Program Cuts

Several Herricks parents expressed their dismay Thursday night at the community center during the regular board of education meeting at the possibility of the district’s Gemini program losing the two teachers who moved throughout the three elementary schools in the district.

This change is a so-called “recommendation” for a potential budget cut for the 2013-2014 school year.

Parents explained that their children really enjoy being challenged by the Gemini program and that without the program their children may be bored being taught at a grade level that is below their intellect.

One parent suggested that she would even pay to allow her child to continue being part of the Gemini program because it is that important to her.

Herricks board Vice President James Gounaris said that he is a fan of morphing programs to try to maintain them.

Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth also encouraged creative ideas to help maintain some of the district's programs that might be cut.
