Herricks to Add More Class Sections to Grades

The district is addressing classrooms that have exceeded the cap for number of students.

The Herricks Board of Education announced on Thursday night during its regular meeting at the that an additional section will be added to the fifth grade in , the and the second grade at Searingtown.

Board president Christine Turner explained that the 2 fifth-grade sections are “two considerable classes where numbers are the highest.”

The board has been monitoring class sizes since some sections and Turner noted that there are other sections that the board is monitoring. Turner noted that the board might be making other classroom size-related changes in the future.

Regarding the , assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction Dr. Deirdre Hayes said that the positions will be filled with teachers who have been excessed from the district.

Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth explained that finding these teachers can take time as they have to go through a list, offer the position and then wait for a response.
