Lake Success Gap Bids Farewell

The store was officially closed on Monday.

After 30 years in the Lake Success Shopping Center, the has officially closed its doors. Since 2007, San Francisco-based Gap Inc. — which counts the Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta among its brands — has been shrinking its North American store footprint.

On a recent afternoon, shoppers walking along the Lake Success Shopping Center strip stopped in their tracks at the site of naked mannequins, torn down brown shelves and an empty store that used to sell warm sweaters, comfortable jeans and seasonal accessories.

“As part of our real estate strategy — which we outlined in 2007 and provided an update on at our Investor Day in October — we're constantly re-evaluating our real estate portfolio to ensure we have the right stores in the right places to best serve our customers,” said Kimberly Terry, Sr. Manager, Gap Brand Engagement.

The Lake Success Gap was no longer serving as a valuable place for customer shopping and in closing, Gap Inc. is doing their best to place employees who want to stay with the company in open position across the family brands.

“We have a strong track record of placing the majority of employees at either another Gap location or at one of our sister brands,” Terry said.

This specific store may have floundered, but according to Terry, “We plan to have about 700 Gap specialty stores and about 250 Gap Outlet stores by the end of 2013.”

Customers can continue to shop at American Manhasset, Roosevelt Field Mall or online at Gap.com
