Law Protecting Animals Left in Hot Cars Approved by Town of North Hempstead
Violators could face a $250 fine, imprisonment for 15 days or both.
The Town North Hempstead Board recently approved an amendment that protects the safety of animals left inside sweltering vehicles.
The Town Board and Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth made it a violation for people in the Town of North Hempstead to leave an unattended animal in a vehicle without sufficient ventilation or water for a prolonged period of time.
Violators could face a $250 fine, imprisonment for 15 days or both.

The Board hopes this new amendment will prevent owners from leaving animals in sweltering cars, especially in hot weather.

The Board also held a public hearing on a proposal that would limit the number of garage sales to four times a year. The proposed law first needs approval by the Nassau County Planning Commission.
Also approved at the meeting:
- A $50,780 contract agreement with Cashin Associates, PC for engineering services for the Stepping Stones Lighthouse restoration, which would fund an underwater survey to evaluate the lighthouse foundation and current sea floor conditions and to identify the design parameters for a new dock.
- An agreement with Bayles Garden Center and Nursery for an application of environmentally friendly pest control products at Harbor Hills Park.
- An intermunicipal agreement with the incorporated Village of Manorhaven for salt storage.
- The award of a bid for the replacement of the roof at Town Hall.
The Town Board’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
