The Academy of Finance hosted its Second Annual Advisory Board Mentoring Day for the Academy of Finance juniors on Friday, April 19.

Since 1988, New Hyde Park Memorial High School has been the home of this highly successful district program of excellence known as the Academy of Finance. The Academy of Finance is a program that gives high school students an opportunity to learn about and prepare for careers in financial services and business-related careers. It is one of several model programs established to promote educational excellence by the National Academy Foundation. The Academy of Finance is a partnership that links the resources of education, business and the community.

The Academy of Finance bridges the gap between the classroom and the workplace. It helps students develop career skills, evaluate their own potential for success and establish personal goals. while providing an enriched, elective four-year comprehensive academic program for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Working with each individual Academy of Finance program is an Advisory Board. The board is comprised of prominent local business leaders in the community. Advisory board members provide support and advice to guide the administration of the Academy program. Present at the meeting representing the New Hyde Park Memorial P.T.S.A. and the parents of the Academy of Finance students was Mrs. Joan Zornberg. In addition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Ferrie and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Mrs. Cheryl Champ were in attendance.

On Friday morning, the following community leaders participated in mentoring students: David Goodman, MetLife Resources, Richard DeMartino, representing both Valley National Bank and the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, Cheryl Fajardo of Nexis Card, Joshua Printz, HSBC Bank, Michael Krolick, Retired Academy of Finance Program Manager, Peter Caputo of E.R.A. Caputo Realty, Carmine Biscardi, representing the State Farm Peter Mathison Agency, Angela Fulgieri of Island Federal Credit Union, John Paccione, Retired J.P. Morgan Chase and Advisory Board Chairperson, and New Hyde Park Memorial Principal Dr. Richard Faccio.

The Academy of Finance juniors are preparing to participate in their summer work-based learning experiences.  The summer work-based learning experience is one of the main components and requirements for Academy of Finance students.  It typically takes place the summer between the student’s junior and senior year and requires the student to participate in 60 hours of work-experience.
