New Hyde Park Baseball Dominates Garden City, 10-0
New Hyde Park Pitcher Pat Meridan threw a four hit shut out and helped his team beat the Garden City Trojans.
After watching Garden City’s James Duff pitch his team to victory Monday, enjoyed a pitching gem of their own, topping the Trojans 10-0 on Tuesday. Pat Meridan pitched a four-hit shut out and didn’t walk any batters, completely shutting down a potent Trojan offense.
After Meridan got Garden City out in the top of the first, the Gladiator bats came up to the plate with a purpose. After Francesco Terrero was thrown out trying to bunt, the second through sixth hitters in the order reached base, scoring four runs – which would be more than Meridan would need.
Heroes: Meridan stole the show with his four hit, no walk, 10 strikeout performance, but his offense was behind him all game long. Francesco Terrero hit a solo home run in the second to pad the lead to five. J.T. O’Callaghan went three for three with two runs, three RBIs and a home run of his own.

Sophomore Anthony Simone had the best game of his brief varsity career. In the sixth inning, he hit a three run blast over the 12-foot right center field fence that landed on the football field, the first of his career. He also had an RBI double in the first to bring the lead to 4-0.
Quotable: After the game, Meridan talked about how he was able to control the plate by mixing speeds and keeping the ball down.

“I had my off-speed stuff working and I hit my spots and was able to keep the ball low. They were hitting a ton of ground balls.”
The Gladiators, with a record of 2-8, know that they are better than their record indicates.
“I think we were more into the game than them after we lost – and we wanted to show them what we are capable of," Meridan said.
New Hyde Park Head Coach Doug Robins had his team alter their approach at the dish and it worked out for the offense.
“We were very aggressive at the plate and we got good swings early in the count,” he said. “Their pitchers left some pitches up and the wind was blowing straight out, which helped.”
What’s Next?: In the rubber game of the series, New Hyde Park will travel back to Garden City Thursday where they will try to take the series in a 4:30 p.m. game.
