The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Wednesday, January 2. Here are some things you may have missed.
Jericho Turnpike Project Traffic Lights
- Superintendent of public works Tom Gannon reported that updating the sequencing of the traffic lights on Jericho Turnpike will be part of the major renovation of Route 25 by the state.
- “Updating the lights is part of the project, how they’re going to time them, whatever else, I don’t know, but the traffic signals is definitely part of that project,” he said.
- Two traffic lights on Jericho at North Sixth Street and North Tenth Street will also be removed with eastbound turns being prohibited.
- The project was originally set to begin this past summer but delays have caused it to be scheduled to begin in spring/ summer 2013.
2013 Little League Parade

- The 2013 annual little league parade will be held on Saturday, April 6 beginning at 10 a.m.
- The staging area will be at Leonard Boulevard between Jericho Turnpike and Park Avenue.
- The parade will travel west on Jericho Turnpike to Covert Avenue, South on Covert Avenue, west on Stewart Avenue to Michael Nuzzi Field.

Building Department
- The building department issued 36 permits in the month of December.
- The zoning board of appeals will meet Thursday, Jan. 10 and hear two cases: 501 Tenth Ave. and 419 New Hyde Park Road.
Other Board News
- The village has asked the beautification committee to refrain from hanging the “Let it Snow” banners around the village. “We’re holding our breath that it doesn’t snow,” deputy mayor Robert Lofaro said. “Every time they do we get snow so we told them to refrain from that, we may find a different winter banner to use.”
- The village received a “lengthy letter” of approximately five to six pages from resident Frank Braunreuther of Eighth Avenue praising the department of public works’ response to Hurricane Sandy. “It’s a glowing celebration of hard work and determination and taking your tasks to heart,” mayor Daniel Petruccio told Gannon.
- The cultural committee will hold it’s “Spotlight: New Hyde Park” competition on Jan. 10-11, 2013 in the William Guild Theater at 7 p.m. for those aged 12-21, with competition for those 12 and younger on Sunday at 3 p.m. Applications are available on the village website.
- Several members of Boy Scout Troop 10, who all started in cub scout troop 544, were in attendance for their citizenship requirements: Jason Biviano (NHP), Aaron Banwer (Great Neck) and Thomas Germana (New Hyde Park).
- The little league will make use of Marcus Christ Hall for uniform distribution on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for team photos.
- The tentative 2013-14 budget hearing date is April 1, 2013. Copies of the budget will be available after March 22, 2012.
The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board is on Wednesday, January 15 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
