NHP-GCP Board of Ed Recognizes Storytelling Winner (VIDEO)
Kindergartner Angelina Alias takes first place in annual Hillside Grade School contest.
For the first time in the history of the Hillside Grade School’s annual storytelling contest, a kindergartner has taken first place. Angelina Alias was given the honor for her recitation of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” from memory.
“Students enjoy telling their stories to our librarian Mrs. Nelson,” Hillside Grade School Principal Karen Olynk said at the February 13 meeting of the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education. “The children are amazing in their abilities to breathe life into the written word.”
The librarian’s annual storytelling festival is one way the school encourages reading with stories being shared in the storytelling festival and many becoming some of the most checked-out books for the next few weeks.
