NHP-GCP Students Present Winning Science Fair Projects

Sixth graders show off science projects and experiments at board of education meeting.

Several sixth grade science students from the various buildings were invited to present their award-winning district science fair projects during the regular meeting of the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education meeting Monday night at the Manor Oaks School.

“We had many of our students from our district participate in the Nassau County Science Fair,” superintendent Robert Katulak said, adding that of that group there are 130 entrants from the sixth and seventh grades throughout Nassau County. “Our district swept the competition.”

The winners from the competition are as follows: first place: Patrick Farrell and Mark Romanelli – Garden City Park School; second place: Lindsey Lockwood – Manor Oaks School; third place: (tie) Noel Paul – Hillside Grade School and Vishwajut Sharma – Manor Oaks School.

Teachers and project advisors Joanne LaRocca and Lara Holzkampwere also given a round of applause because “nothing would be possible without them,” Katulak said.

The presenters included Christian Tse and Aditya Jundal from the Garden City Park School and their project on powering a remote controlled car via solar energy; Lindsey Lockwood from Manor Oaks testing if iron-fortified cereals lived up to their claims; Noel Paul from Hillside Grade School testing what materials can best clean up an oil spill; Roshan George, Joel Varughese and Justin Joy from the New Hyde Park Road School testing how much bacteria is in the school and in what locations that teachers and students use.
