NHP Students Place at New York State Science Engineering Fair
Research students returned with plenty of hardware.
New Hyde Park Memorial High School Science Research students received honors for their participation in the New York State Science Engineering Fair at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School on April 18, during an award ceremony on May 24 at Jericho High School.
Senior Carolyn Wilson placed second in Behavioral Science, and fourth overall in fair. Carolyn spent the summers of both her sophomore and junior years researching her project, “The Effect of Immunomodulatory Drugs on the Pharmacological Induction of Fetal Hemoglobin in Vitro,” at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Junior Daniel Celic placed first in chemistry, studying “Acid Corrosion Inhibition of Tantalum Electroplated Iron.”
Sophomore team Christina Jacob and Nivetha Shanmugarajah were awarded first-place in the category of Earth, Space, Energy for their project, “Prolonging the Life of DSSCs.” In addition, junior Narindra Persaud’s project, “The Effect of Temperature on the Efficiency of Energy Production using an Electrolytic Cell” received honorable mention in Environmental Science, while freshman Vishwajit Sharma earned an honorable mention in Biology for his work on, “The Social Network: How Bacteria Talk.”

Principal Dr. Richard Faccio and science research teacher Angela Stone commended all of the students on their outstanding achievements.
