The Dish: Plantain Crusted Sweet and Spicy Chili Shrimp

Chef Alain Ribiere's is drawing inspiration from Elmhurst and East New York and bringing new tastes to Jonathan's in Garden City Park.

The Dish: Plantain crusted sweet and spicy chili shrimp.

What’s Inside: To make the breading for the jumbo shrimp, the chef deep-fries slices of green plantain until they are crisp, lets them dry and then grinds them in the food processor. This is mixed with panko bread crumbs and used as breading for the shrimp.

Sides: The shrimp is served with fresh melon and pineapple salsa, coconut jasmine rice and sesame green beans.

How’s It Taste: There’s lots of flavor and texture here and this dish certainly evokes the tropics. The shrimp is crunchy on the outside and tender within. The spicy Thai chili sauce and sweet coconut rice create a flavorful yin/yang.

Cost: As an entrée: $24; as a tapas at the bar: $9.
