Update: 75-Year-Old Woman Who Died After Being Hit On Jericho Turnpike Identified
She was one of two women hit near South 3rd Street.
Update: The 75-year-old woman who was killed after being hit by a car while trying to cross Jericho Turnpike has been identified as Joan Van Grembergen of Bellerose Manor, according to an updated Third Precinct report.
One of the two pedestrians who were hit by a car as they crossed Jericho Turnpike heading south near the corner of South 3rd Street on Friday at 6:24 p.m. died at Winthrop Hospital later that night, according to a police report from the .
The two women, who were 75 and 80 years old respectively, were hit by a 2003 Nissan Xterra driven by an 18-year-old from Garden City, the police report said. The report noted that the 75-year-old woman had serious head trauma and was taken to a Withnrop Hospital by the , where she died at 8:18 p.m. as a result of her injuries. The other woman, 80, had a broken femur and was also taken to a local hospital, according to the police report.

The police still had Jericho Turnpike between Hillside Boulevard and North 2nd Street blocked off as of 8:40 p.m. Detectives don't think there was any criminality related to the accident at present, the police report said. An updated police report also noted that the 2003 Nissan was impounded for safety and brake inspections.
This is the second accident in about a month where a pedestrian has been struck by a car on Jericho Turnpike. On Nov. 15, 60-year-old Sai Yo Chen was hit by a car on Jericho Turnpike and South 11th Street, according to a Third Precinct police report. Chen was pronounced dead when she got to the hospital after sustaining severe chest trauma and internal bleeding, the police report said.
